ANIMA INFO 114 - Special

Interview with Tetsuya Bessho

Tetsuya Bessho 別所 哲也 was in Brazil in August for 17o Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival. He´s one of the founding members of Short Shorts Film Festival. He was born in Shizuoka, Japan in August 31 of 1965. Bessho talked with us about his career and said of Ultraman - the Next, movie that arrives on DVD Brazilian market in 2006.

Talk a little about you... your age, where you was born...
I was born in Japan and created in Tokyo. I have 40 years (laughs - Bessho seems to have much less). I started my career as an actor in Hollywood. At those times I knew many people who make films... My first movie was in 1982, whose principal actor was Charlton Heston. In 1997, I returned Los Angeles and knew some producers. I have also participated on a presentation of shorts films in the Sony/ Columbia studios.

Which are yours preferred actors, producers or directors in general?
This is a great question for me... (pause) Stanley Kubrick and I also remember George Lucas. I like his work, especially for helping the new producers/directors. I like the position he has in relation to the novices.

Do you follow the anime world? Do you have any preference?
I´m a great Osamu Tezuka fan – besides he’s from my generation...Currently I like Hayao Miyazaki. He´s one of the greatest animators in the world.

You only dubbed Art of Fighting バトルスピリッツ 龍虎の拳 anime. Have you interest in making another dubbling?
Yes, yes. But I didn´t had another chance. It depends of the producers and directors.

Would you like to make a movie in Hollywood with a Japanese thematic?
Yes! As the Last Samurai or Sayuri that had made great success...

But has some with specific theme, that already is in the paper?
I would like to make a film with a more modern theme...

Do you like to make live actions? You have made one of the Godzillas?
I made one. Yes...

Would you another live action? Would you produce?
Yes, I would make... I make the main character and I liked so was a great experience!

Ultraman - The Net is arriving on Brazilian DVD market. Tell a little about this work. How is to make a movie of a so know character?
I´m a great Ultraman fan. He is a character icon of my generation, the men of my age... And in this paper, I had that to use the imagination because I had that to interpret with elements that didn´t exist... All the Osamu Tezuka characters as Astro Boy, Hayao Miyazaki characters and Ultraman have a very relation with the world environment. A relation with the environment that encircles them. It´s as monsters and heroes translating the ambient problems to the young...

Could you tell about your future projects?
I cannot speak due to the contract. It´s a theatrical project in Japan for the next year...
